Scottish firm leads the way in working with suppliers to cut waste

Laing O’Rourke Scotland - a business unit of the Laing O’Rourke Group, the largest construction company in the UK – has become the first contractor in the UK to implement a construction-oriented Supply Chain Management programme.

This implementation has been possible through the company’s work with Envirowise, the government funded programme which offers free, confidential advice to UK businesses in order for them to increase profitability and reduce environmental impact.

In the case of Laing O'Rourke Scotland, Envirowise has worked with the company and its subcontractors to identify where wastes occur in the supply chain, offering advice on minimizing that waste and introducing improved resource efficiency practices.

Spokesperson (tbc), Laing O’Rourke Scotland commented: "Partnering with Envirowise makes business sense. Through Envirowise, both Laing O'Rourke Scotland - as the host organisation - and our key specialist subcontractors are engaging and communicating on issues regarding resource efficiency with significant potential cost savings being identified as a result. The service is free to access and delivers cost savings and environmental benefits. It's a win-win scenario."

Delegates to the Scottish Government’s annual Scottish Energy & Environment Conference (SEEC) taking place on Tuesday 7th February, 2006, can hear more about this and many other aspects of resource efficiency from Envirowise director Dr Martin Gibson.

The event - a full-day conference and supporting exhibition supported by Envirowise, ScottishPower, BAE Systems and the Carbon Trust - will take place at the Glasgow Thistle Hotel. The keynote speaker at the event will be Nicol Stephen MSP, Deputy First Minister for Enterprise & Lifelong Learning.
