Falcon’s profits soar after going green

  • Onsite visit leads to savings of £25,000
  • Companies invited to utilise free and confidential advice
  • Resources available include Advice Line, website and onsite reviews

A Scottish catering equipment manufacturer is reaping the financial benefits of improved resource efficiency after working with Envirowise.

Falcon Foodservice Equipment, based in Stirling, manufactures a wide range of catering equipment for the public and private sectors which includes the Chieftain, Dominator and Pro-Lite brands.

The company, which employs 400 people, approached Envirowise for assistance in reducing their business costs and impact on the local environment and as a result, took part in a free, confidential on-site waste review. These visits* see Envirowise advisors working with companies to produce tailored waste minimisation plans, including savings targets, suggested actions on how to consume fewer resources and advice on legislation.

David Wilson, engineering and facilities manager at Falcon Foodservice Equipment, said: "It was very useful to be able to draw on the technical and commercial knowledge of our Envirowise advisor, who gave us immediate feedback and advice while on-site. Much of this initial feedback could be acted on for little or no cost.

“We then received a written report which recommended taking action in four key areas: improved raw material utilisation, using reprocessed oil for testing, reusing office waste paper for spare packaging and recovery of cardboard for recycling.  These proposals have now been implemented by Falcon and we have already made savings of £25,000 as a result.

“Building on the recommendations in our report, we are now working closely with our waste management company to minimise waste. We estimate that this, together with plans to reduce our water consumption, will result in further savings worth more than £8,000.

“I would recommend that any company that is keen to save money through simple waste minimisation procedures takes advantage of a free onsite visit."

Alan Hendry, Envirowise Programme Manager for Scotland, said: “The example of Falcon Foodservice Equipment suggests that other companies in the region might be missing a trick when it comes to looking at ways to save money.

““In almost every type of business there is the potential for cost savings, but exactly where these lie is not always obvious. This is why we offer companies a range of initiatives, which allow them to use our knowledge and expertise to cut costs in different areas and benefit the environment at the same time.”
