Scottish food firm enjoys the benefits of going green

  • Onsite visit leads to potential savings of £50,000
  • Companies invited to utilise free and confidential advice
  • Resources available include Advice Line, website and onsite reviews

A Scottish food ingredients manufacturer is reaping the financial benefits of improved resource efficiency after working with Envirowise.

Macphie of Glenbervie, which is based 20 miles south of Aberdeen, was already working towards implementing an environmental management system (EMS) when it approached Envirowise for a free, confidential, on-site waste review*. This visit sees Envirowise advisors working with companies to produce a tailored waste minimisation plan, including savings targets, suggested actions on how to consume fewer resources and advice on legislation.

Philip Annandale, Environmental Manager at Macphie of Glenbervie, said: “It was recognised that the company was disposing of a large quantity of waste and that there was huge potential to minimise this.

“We arranged a visit from an Envirowise advisor who helped us identify areas where waste could be reduced, recycled or even eliminated altogether. Not only did it enable us to set realistic targets for reducing our environmental impact – it provided us with a starting point for further work on water and energy reduction with Scottish Water and Action Energy.”

Following the Envirowise visit, the company has installed meters to monitor water usage and energy surveys have been carried out to identify areas where savings can be made. An independent consultant was also brought in to review the firm’s waste management practices. The company are now looking at potential savings of £50,000.

Alan Hendry, Envirowise Programme Manager for Scotland, comments: “The example of Macphie of Glenbervie suggests that other companies in Scotland might be missing a trick when it comes to looking at ways to save money.

“In almost every type of business there is the potential for cost savings, but exactly where these lie is not always obvious. Envirowise offers companies a range of initiatives, which allow them to use their knowledge and expertise to cut costs in different areas and benefit the environment at the same time.”
