Northamptonshire companies harness potential savings of over £1/2 million by working together

Members of a Business Resource Efficiency Club in Northamptonshire are celebrating potential savings of more than £500,000, having identified opportunities to improve their use of resources and reduce waste.

Cut Waste – Improve Competitiveness (CW-IC) is made up of over 160 companies from across Northamptonshire. Since September 2005, it has been working in partnership with the Envirowise programme and other local business support organisations to share best practice and minimise waste.

The Club comprises businesses as diverse as a tools manufacturer, a valves and fittings manufacturer for the water and sewage industry, and a technology disposal company. It works by providing a number of seminars and training courses throughout the year. In addition, Envirowise facilitates on-site waste audits for companies to pinpoint areas where resource efficiency can be improved and money saved.

Jeanette Mclaughlin-Barker who leads the Club, said: "We are thrilled with the progress made by the CW-IC. Through our work with Envirowise and local business support organisations such as the Carbon Trust, our members have achieved fantastic savings – and have demonstrated the clear business benefits to be gained from working in partnership towards a common resource efficiency goal. We look forward to building on these successes over the coming year."

A spokesperson at paper, plastics and board merchant Robert Horne Group said: "The CW-IC helped us to get started towards resource efficiency, and to appreciate the specific business areas requiring further focus. As a result, the business is now progressing towards a valuable and recognized environmental standard – ISO 14001 accreditation."

Resource Efficiency Clubs (RECs) are government-funded through Defra’s BREW (Business Resource Efficiency & Waste Programme) scheme. The Resource Efficiency Clubs programme is managed by Envirowise.
