With new rules governing the regulation of food waste in England effective from 1 January 2006 - Envirowise is urging companies within the food sector to take advantage of the free advice available to help them comply.
Adjustments to the Animal By-Products Regulations (ABPR) will require retailers to dispose of uncooked meat, fish and eggs using approved waste outlets such as incinerators and pet food, rendering, or composting plants. In addition, former foodstuffs including cooked meat and fish and catering waste should no longer be supplied as food for livestock.
Dr Martin Gibson, Envirowise programme director, commented: "These changes will affect companies throughout the food and drink industry and many will need to identify alternative waste disposal methods.
"These businesses need to start reviewing their procedures now if they are to lawfully dispose of their food waste and free advice is available to help them through Envirowise."
