This Case Study demonstrates how adopting a systematic approach to water management can save money and increase productivity. Westbury Dairies Ltd designed and constructed a milk processing facility, capable of processing 850 million litres/year of milk. All site water is provided by the recovery, treatment and re-use of condensate formed during the milk evaporation process. An integrated system of treatment, cleaning-in-place and packaging processes ensures that the facility can operate continuously with no deterioration in quality or hygiene, and automated control minimises the loss of raw materials. The benefits to Westbury Dairies Ltd of combining schemes to reduce water, raw material and energy use, and minimise wastewater generation, include savings of almost £1.13 million in the first year of operation.
