Under the Environmental Protection (Duty of Care) Regulations 1991 (and subsequent amendment, 2003), all producers and handlers of waste are required to 'take reasonable measures to prevent the unauthorised deposit, treatment or disposal of waste'. Therefore, when you engage a waste management contractor (WMC) to transport and dispose of your waste, you have a legal obligation to ensure that the waste is disposed of in an authorised and responsible manner.
