Is the food and drink sector a significant contributor of waste in the UK?
Yes. The Environment Agency estimates that the sector generates at least 10% or 10 million tonnes, of the total amount of waste produced by industrial and commercial activity in the UK. For this reason, Envirowise has a dedicated programme to help the sector to improve its resource efficiency. For further information read about our free tailored support package. My company needs water for washing fresh produce before processing, and consequently, has high water charges. How can we reduce water costs when water is essential to the process and we must comply with hygiene legislation?
Water charges are comprised of extraction and effluent treatment costs. There is potential for reduction in both of these costs by water re-use, more efficient processes (especially 'clean in place' operations) and onsite effluent treatment. See reducing water use and effluent load.
My family business is a farm, but with a cheese production business and shop - can we get help from Envirowise?
The agriculture sector is not currently included within the scope of Envirowise, so you would not be able to receive Envirowise assistance for your farm operations. Your small businesses, such as your cheese production facility and shop, however, will be able to get assistance with waste minimisation. For further information, read about our free tailored support package.
Does our food processing company come under the packaging regulations? How can I calculate my packaging tonnage?

Tonnage can be calculated from production or purchasing records or, for companies with a turnover of less than £5million a simplified calculation is available based on turnover.
