"SWMP Builder" is intended to aid decision making for the site manager or waste manager on a construction site by organising all the likely types and quantities of waste arising from the project, stage by stage and offering options for the management of that waste: be that reduced ordering; reusing on site or recycling etc.

SWMP Builder is not intended as a mechanism with which to monitor waste, as such tools already exist.

The ultimate aim is that by accurately predicting types of material likely to arise suitable provision can be made to reduce the percentage, which is destined for landfill.

The spreadsheet has hidden macros etc to turn a seemingly daunting task for a contracts manager (with perhaps no previous knowledge of waste management) into a quick and easy method for keeping track of materials and waste on site. Most of the required information can be selected from drop down boxes and excel will calculate the volumes and automatically populate fields such as EWC code and waste category (inert, non-haz, haz).

Once the information has been inputted there are several summary sheets, which may be used for reporting purposes, either to company head office or the client.

In addition to the excel spreadsheet there is a 20-minute animated, training programme which runs through Flashplayer taking the user through the various steps necessary to correctly populate the spreadsheet. The idea behind this is so that busy site managers can download both the spreadsheet and the training programme and within half an hour be on their way to using the sheet.

This has various advantages, particularly on smaller construction sites with very limited staff:

  • avoids the need to attend training sessions away from site
  • as many people as required can input into the sheet
  • users can refresh themselves if they forget aspects of the tool
