Nigel Youd, Group Environmental Manager at
Deans Foods, McDonald’s supplier, says:
“Working in collaboration with McDonald’s and Envirowise enables us to establish
a benchmark for performance and plan production more accurately so that we deliver
an efficient service.”
So, what actually happens?
(1) Envirowise signs up large 'host'
companies for this year-long initiative. They in turn invite suppliers
to join them in partnership to minimise waste and maximise cost savings.
(2) Typically after a launch event
to get the ball rolling, suppliers are offered
free advisory visits (Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales only) .
(3) Next, suppliers are invited to workshops delivered by specialist trainers. These
cover the 'big' environmental and cost issues facing the food and drink industry
—
- waste and water minimisation
- packaging and cleaner design
- legislation
- energy
- transport.
(4) Envirowise keeps the momentum going
with support and practical advice to suppliers throughout the year.
(5) Savings are measured to assess
impact.
Benefits to suppliers are clear. Those involved in Supply Chain Partnerships in
previous years have identified savings of £5.5 million. Companies including
Allied Distillers, Boots
Group Plc, Safeway,
Center Parcs and
The Co-operative Group have worked with their suppliers to yield
savings throughout the chain.
