Take part in One Bin Day

The 21st February is One Bin Day, an experiment to raise awareness of the amount of waste generated by office businesses in a typical day. Businesses across the country are being encouraged to restrict the number of bins available to staff to make it more obvious how much they, as individuals and as a collective business, throw away.

How can your business take part?

To participate, small firms can remove every bin but one from the office, whereas larger companies are asked to clear out as many bins as possible.

This will have two effects.

  • Removing the convenience of having a bin next to every desk, staff will have to think about the way they deal with their waste, rather than simply dropping them into their own personal bins without a second thought.
  • Secondly, if staff stick to their normal routine, a single bin will very quickly become full and overflow, showing you a very visual illustration of the level of waste being generated on a daily basis.

The aim of the day is to help firms to reassess their waste habits and become motivated to undertake a more serious review of the amount of waste they generate. This would help us get one step further in cutting down on the 75 million tonnes of waste generated by UK industrial and commercial businesses every year.

If you would like to take part in the One Bin Day experiment or know a business that is interested, please contact Sam Hemmant on 01635 280379.
