The legislation refers to animal by-products and "foods that are no longer intended
for human consumption". These are defined as category 3 products. Produce becomes
covered by this definition when, for example, the store manager or a nominated individual
removes it from sale because:
- it has passed its 'sell by' or 'use by' date; or
- it is damaged, soiled or contaminated to an extent that it is no longer appropriate
to display it for sale.
Check this list of ingredients to see whether your business handles category
3 products (i.e. those covered by the new requirements of the ABPR). If so, move
on to the next stage.
The following are NOT permitted to go to landfill, or to be used as animal feed.
Chilled or frozen:
- raw meat, poultry, fish and seafood (in packs or loose) that needs to be cooked
before eating (including sausages and burgers)
- raw bacon and gammon (or other cured meats)
- raw meat, poultry, fish or seafood items in coating (such as breadcrumbs or batter)
or sauces (such as barbeque, garlic etc.)
- raw eggs (including shells)
- unpasteurised milk
- all raw meat and fish waste arising from the production of food products even if
the end-product is not intended to be cooked before it is eaten.
Also, former foodstuffs that have not undergone a heat treatment resulting in a
physical change, such as:
- partially cooked meat (e.g. rare roast beef, raw/pink meat)
- smoked salmon
- sashimi (raw fish) or sushi containing sashimi
- smoked, dried or cured meat
- Bresaola
- beef jerky
- Parma and Serrano ham
- honey (in bulk, rather than as an ingredient).
