Recipe for handling food waste

Separate and store:

  • Separate waste foodstuffs into two streams - category 3 materials (i.e. any materials from the menu above) must be kept separate from other foodstuffs that can go to landfill.
  • Ensure there are measures in place to avoid the waste products being discharged into the wrong containers.
  • Label all food waste "not for human consumption".
  • In addition, also label all 'category 3 material'.
  • If food waste is not separated it must ALL be dealt with as category 3 animal by-products.

Dispose:

  • ABPs must be collected and disposed of as soon as reasonably practicable.
  • The materials must be collected and disposed of by companies on the government's list of approved renderers
  • Local stores could work together to establish workable collection routes or to use the same collector as, say, the local butcher.
  • Larger businesses may choose to arrange collections from all stores in their group.
  • Ensure that you have made suitable arrangements so that in the event of an emergency, such as a freezer breakdown or product recall, a special collection can be provided.
  • Note that poorly emptied packaging will be considered as animal by-products and cannot be disposed of to landfill. However, many disposal companies are able to take packaged material.
