The Water Technology List has been developed by
Defra and HM Revenue and Customs
in partnership with Envirowise to encourage more efficient water use and improvements
in water quality. By investing in products that use water more sustainably, businesses
can enjoy an initial cash boost through the Enhanced Capital Allowance, as well
as ongoing cost savings on their water bills.
From 22 September 2005 the Water Technology List (WTL) was expanded to include three
new technology categories: efficient showers, cleaning in place equipment and efficient
membrane filtration systems for wastewater reuse.
The inclusion of efficient membrane filtration systems in particular, offers food
and drink businesses a major incentive to invest in this type of equipment. All
the necessary pre- and post-treatment equipment required, providing it meets the
published eligibility criteria set out on the WTL website, is eligible for the Enhanced Capital Allowances (ECA)
scheme for water efficient technologies. One key component of the criteria is that
the ‘system’ must allow for at least 40% of the treated effluent to be reused on
site. These system-led applications can be made by either the business investing
in the equipment or their contractor/supplier.
Applications can only be made via the website
following registration. If successful the business making the investment will receive
a certificate of environmental benefit from Defra, which certifies the system as
qualifying for the ECA.
