Top water minimisation tips for hotels

Although hotels may not be one of the major water-using industries, there is much potential for healthy water savings.

The Environment Agency’s Hotels Water Efficiency Project achieved reduction in water use by an average of 25 percent per day per guest and Envirowise data shows a range of water usage of between 27m3 to 420 m3 per employee for hotels.

Before you can start minimising the amount of water your hotel consumes, it is important to understand where water is being used. Areas to look at include:

  • bathrooms
  • washrooms
  • kitchens
  • boiler room
  • laundry
  • leisure facilities e.g. swimming pool, steam rooms.

One of the best and simplest ways of identifying where water is used (and therefore where savings could be made) is to walk around the hotel, recording your observations. GG152R Tracking water use to cut costs contains useful guidance on how to collect and analyse information on water use.

Envirowise has also developed a series of simple, practical tools to enable you to record and monitor your water consumption. The downloadable Excel spreadsheets Monitoring Water Consumption are easy to use, and allow you to record water consumption data and automatically generate graphs to illustrate trends. Simply click on Measure and Monitor on the Water Account homepage.

You can find more information on selecting appropriate water saving devices in GG522 Cost effective water saving devices and practices – for commercial sites. You may also be able to claim an Enhanced Capital Allowance if you purchase products from the Water Technology List. Technologies include efficient showers, taps and toilets.
