A precious resource ...

Although Wales has lots of rain, the ability to capture water is limited In Water Resources for the Future - A Strategy for Wales, the Environment Agency sets out a plan for the future management of water resources in Wales. This shows that primary industry and manufacturing will be requiring about 300Ml/d (mega litres per day) of water by 2010 with this potentially rising to over 750Ml/d by 2025, depending upon the global economic climate. During this time of dramatic increases in demand, the amount of water collected will actually reduce. Plus, the cost of supplying water will rise by around 4% and trade effluent costs will generally increase by 10% in 2006/07.

For businesses to protect themselves from future water shortages and increasing costs, the strategy recommends that commerce and industry pay more attention to water efficiency. It also highlights that in many cases, water saving initiatives can pay for themselves in less than a year, contributing to long term profitability and viability.

Demonstrating this are 23 Welsh organisations taking part in Envirowise's Big Splash initiative. Between them, they have identified over £400 000 worth of savings through adopting water efficiency measures.
