Defra has recently issued the FISS - Food Industry Sustainability Strategy which sets out how the food industry can help achieve sustainable development and respond to the challenges outlined by David Bellamy from FDF.
A PDF of Defra's public consultation document is available. For Envirowise's summary of the Strategy, read on.
The FISS is a voluntary framework for action drawn up by Defra with the help of a Stakeholder group of thirty members including FDF, NFU and T&GWU. It sets out how all those involved in the food industry beyond the farm gate (food & drink manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and food service providers) in the UK can, through widespread adoption of best practice, help achieve sustainable development.
The additional sustainability measures advocated by the Strategy would be voluntary: no formal enforcement mechanisms, sanction regimes or penalties for non-compliance are proposed. However, progress will be measured through a series of key performance indicators (KPIs) and will be kept under review with trade representatives and captains of industry.
