Building environmental awareness in small construction businesses

Free Envirowise training is helping small construction businesses in the Midlands and South West discover practical ways to protect the environment and save money.

Bricks imageWith two informal half hour sessions on separate days, the training enables small building companies (with 50 employees or less) to improve resource efficiency through better material and waste management. The training is designed to raise awareness of the environmental impact of construction activities and waste production in particular. The industry as a whole produces 107.2 million tonnes* of waste every year and the potential in this sector to improve resource use and save money is significant. The sessions also make small builders aware of relevant legislation and realistic actions that can be taken on site to reduce the amount of waste produced and increase the amount recycled. Even small steps, such as improving materials handling on site to prevent breakage, can make a big difference to the bottom line.

To ensure that there is as little disruption to the working day as possible, the training takes place on site, and at a time and date that is most convenient for the businesses involved. The project will deliver training to 30 sites in each of the three regions (East Midlands, West Midlands and South West).

Book your place before May 2008 by emailing smallbuildertraining@envirowise.gov.uk or call +44 (0)1793 816727.
