Designers need to consider the environmental impact of the raw materials they specify for their product or packaging at the design stage. Issues to consider are:

  • Use Less - Using less material and fewer materials can reduce impact and lowers costs. This can make products and packaging lighter and simpler reducing waste and the cost and impact of distribution.
  • Less Impact - Consider the environmental impact of the materials you specify for the product or its packaging. Do they have to travel a long distance to your factory? Can you specify less polluting or biodegradable materials?
  • Recyclable - Can materials in your product be substituted for ones that can be recycled at End of Life? If so, do recycling facilities exist and can the material itself be clearly marked to aid its recycling.
  • Legislation - Find out about banned and restricted raw materials. See the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) and the Packaging essential requirements.
