Robert Wiseman Dairies plc demonstrates their commitment to resource efficiency through employing best practice across their supply chain. Further to their significant activity in this area, Envirowise was able to identify, across larger suppliers, a potential £135,150 of savings through small improvements.
The company procures, produces and delivers liquid milk to customers throughout Great Britain. It operates out of five major processing dairies in Aberdeen, East Kilbride, Glasgow, Manchester and Droitwich Spa and is currently constructing another processing site Bridgwater in Somerset.
They are fully committed to minimising their impact to the environment, accredited to ISO14001 they are now expanding their efforts to their fleet and suppliers, from using biodiesel to developing supplier assessment criteria.
Further to their proven successes, Wiseman Dairies wished to work with their suppliers to achieve greater environmental performance and develop sustainable working relationships for the future. This resulted in a two stage project with Envirowise.
Phase one focussed on their larger packaging suppliers, with the largest of these receiving a visit from Envirowise to identify and quantify areas of best practice and or ways to improve. To support this, advisors ran a training day attended by a representative from each of the supply chain companies to discuss the various ways to increase efficiencies. Phase two focused on smaller suppliers and contractors who were also invited to a separate training day with the aim of introducing measures which could improve their processes and reduce the impact of the Wiseman supply chain as a whole.
The training days proved to be very successful both in terms of achieving company wide buy-in and with regards to enabling each member of the supply chain to make positive changes to their own processes.
This project has allowed Envirowise to showcase a highly efficient supply chain and enthusiasm shown by Wiseman Dairies as an example of best practice. Scottish businesses are urged to adopt a similar approach when looking at their own processes and that of their suppliers with an aim to continually improve and reap the benefits.
