What's in it for business?

The regulators recognise the genuine benefits to be gained from reducing water usage and pollution. Here are a few snippets highlighting the pay-off for UK companies:

"Improving water efficiency needn't be complicated nor cost money."

"Efficient water use is encouraged by all of the regulatory agencies and simple measures can significantly reduce the disposal costs of wastewater by reducing the volume and/or strength of the effluent discharged. Water Service Northern Ireland and Envirowise have a number of publications available on their websites aimed at the minimisation of water usage."

"Many business are unaware of the amount of water they use or the amounts they pay for it. The Environment Agency produces a simple step-by-step water auditing guide Waterwise - good for business, great for the environment that helps you work out where you use water and how much you could save, see www.environment-agency.gov.uk/savewater. For advice on process-based water use, Envirowise is the place to start."

"Often your costs go down by more than your water bill as you also waste less energy and materials, and your discharge costs decrease."

"SEPA has a role in encouraging environmental best practice, including water efficiency and does this by providing advice and information. In addition it works in partnership with other organisations, including Envirowise, on a variety of projects that demonstrate the benefits of using less water. Our Environmental Protection Officers raise awareness of the advantages of using water wisely and signpost companies to further sources of help, such as Envirowise."
