Envirowise supports Work Wise Week’s ‘Environmental Benefits of Smarter Working’ day

Envirowise and Work Wise Week have a meeting of minds and objectives on Friday 16 May – a day set aside to focus on the environmental benefits of smarter working.

Since 1994 Envirowise has been championing the benefits of resource efficiency within UK business – and Work Wise UK are promoting these issues with a weeklong dedication to practices related to working smarter and living better.

Work Wise Week consists of a seven day programme highlighting different aspects of working efficiently. This begins with National Work from Home Day on Thursday 15 May and is followed by the environmental benefits of smarter working on Friday. The other five days include: smart working weekend (for those who provide an out-of-hours service) and transport day. The week will culminate in the Work Wise UK Summit – a conference held at the QEII in London.

“Envirowise is particularly interested in the ‘environmental benefits of smarter working’ day which focuses on resource efficiency,” explains Simon Drury, business partnerships manager at Envirowise. “It’s very encouraging to see such an emphasis put on highlighting the benefits of environmental concern on a commercial basis. We are working hard to increase awareness and drawing attention to all relevant initiatives is an important part of that. It’s fantastic that Work Wise is including this as part of its programme.”

The ‘environmental benefits of working smarter’ day will look at how workers can reduce their own and their organisation’s carbon emissions – and ultimately diminish costs. Suggestions to achieve these goals include reducing emissions associated with travel by allowing employees to work from home and encouraging flexible working and compressed hours – where the hours usually spread over five working days are completed in four, cutting out the commute normally attributed to that fifth day.

Phil Flaxton, chief executive of Work Wise UK, says: “The increasing sophistication of communications technology means that it is no longer necessary to travel many miles for meetings or commute into the office daily. The wider adoption of smarter working practices, such as home working, mobile and remote working, could be one of the long term solutions to mankind’s impact on the environment.”
