Envirowise is urging businesses to help themselves save money on World Water Day. With fears of an economic recession around the corner, water efficiency is one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to achieve cost savings, says the sustainable business expert.
Offices across the UK are needlessly wasting 310 millions of litres of water every single working day. By reviewing their water usage and taking action, UK businesses can claim their share of an estimated annual national saving of £507 million through some simple water efficiency measures.
Up to 30 per cent of a company's water and effluent bill can be cut by implementing simple water management techniques. For example, a variable flush mechanism costs around £20 but could save up to four litres per flush - paying for itself within a week or less. At an average of four flushes per person each working day, this step alone could represent cost savings of as much as £494 per year per employee.
"Every drop of water has a price and a carbon impact. Envirowise can help businesses realise how something as simple as fixing a dripping tap can have a positive impact on their profits," states Kate Davis, Envirowise business advice manager for water.

Steps to minimise water use
- Turn taps off fully and replace leaking hoses and worn tap washers for a quick and cheap way of saving water. In staff washrooms, push-button taps can use up to half the water used through conventional taps.
- Reduce the amount of clean water used in every toilet flush by fitting a water displacement device into cisterns.
- You should be able to reduce your water bill by 20 - 30% by monitoring water use, finding and repairing leaks, using sprays or jets for washing, fitting triggers on hoses, considering cleaning-in-place and/or recycling of water.
- Reduce your need for mains supply water by looking at ways you could recycle 'grey water' for cleaning equipment, vehicles or outside areas.
