Retail's main waste stream: case studies

Savings in action: supermarket benefits from switching to pallets from roll cages

Safeway has achieved considerable benefits from its programme of phasing in pallets to replace roll cages, including:

  • an increase of up to 40% in the load carried per vehicle;
  • reduced product damage;
  • more options for back hauling used packaging from stores and products from suppliers.

Savings in action: packaging redesign brings cost and environmental benefits

Sainsbury's redesign of the packaging of its own-brand garlic bread resulted in significant cost and other benefits. The previous packaging consisted of a white-lined cardboard carton with a plastic film. The packaging is now a single layer of polypropylene and polyester plastic film. The change resulted in:

  • net savings of 160 tonnes/year of packaging;
  • optimised transport due to space saved on lorry loads;
  • reduced obligation under the packaging waste regulations for the supplier;
  • reduced packaging waste for consumers.
