Top 10 tips

There are many key stakeholders who have a vested interest in your shopping centre's environmental performance. How you manage your operations and respond to questions on environmental matters affects your reputation and, consequently, your success.

To take action initially, write a simple action plan that identifies who is responsible for taking action and sets a target date for completing each action. Print out and use the action checklist here to help you.

This is a summary of ten simple actions that could help you implement environmental best practice in your shopping centre:

  • Separate wastes at source and send them for recycling.
  • Separate food wastes.
  • Arrange for returns/unsold products to be sent back to suppliers.
  • Re-use packaging materials and re-usable wood, metal or plastic pallets.
  • Fit water saving devices in toilets/washrooms.
  • Turn off lights at night and during closed periods.
  • Ensure heating, boiler, air-conditioning and lighting programmes are turned off at night and when the premises are unoccupied.
