Hazardous Waste

What is hazardous waste?

Waste is hazardous when it contains properties that might make it harmful to our health or the environment. Hazardous waste now includes televisions, computer monitors, fluorescent lighting and end-of-life vehicles.

How does this affect my company?

Any business handling hazardous wastes should already be working with its waste contractor to ensure safe disposal. This may be more costly as a result of a potential increase in the distance to an appropriate landfill site and you may be asked to pre-treat your waste before it is collected.

There are some differences in the legislation in each of the four countries of the UK. You can get guidance from your regulator at the Netregs website.

As part of meeting the Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC), some wastes will need to be sampled, tested and described for your waste contractor to ensure that the waste will be disposed of in the correct way.
